5 Tips for Using Herbal Supplements Safely
Chamomile. Siberian Ginseng. Echinacea. Reishi. The mere names of herbal supplements sound exotic and alluring. Otherwise known as botanicals, herbs—which can be found in both foods and supplements—differ from vitamins and minerals in that they can be used for health-supporting purposes, and generally support a particular area of health such as bones or the liver. Why I Chose to Get the COVID-19 Vaccine
As a naturopathic doctor who prizes a holistic, natural approach to health, it may seem surprising to some of you that I’ve chosen to get vaccinated against COVID-19. This is understandable, to be sure, but after giving the vaccine a tremendous amount of thought—and conducting an enormous amount of research—I felt it was the best decision I could make for my family, friends, patients and community.
We are all well aware that COVID-19 can be not only a life-threatening disease but also one with grave, long term consequences. Several parts of the body, such as the neurological and vascular systems, can suffer greatly from the virus. At the time of this writing, the risks of the vaccine are significantly less than the potential dangers of the disease. More than 17.2 million doses of the vaccine have been administered in the U.S. This includes nearly 72,000 shots given in Hawaii, the state in which I run my practice. Given the huge number of people vaccinated, there have been relatively few unusual side effects. Indeed, the majority of those vaccinated—millions of people—have experienced only mild to moderate side effects, such as a slight fever, soreness at the injection site, or fatigue. While these side effects may be unpleasant, they are both normal and welcome indicators that one’s immune system has been activated by the vaccine, and is mounting a healthy immune response. Read on…

The Resolution You’ll Benefit from for Years: Detox Your Relationships
The New Year is fast approaching, which means a fresh start for us all. And while standard New Year’s resolutions—from toning up to eating clean—are often wise, there’s one personal pledge that often goes overlooked: Removing ourselves from relationships that bring us more worry and pain than solace and joy. (Just think of Auld Lang Syne playing in the background, “Should old acquaintances be forgot, and never brought to mind?”)
As a naturopathic doctor, I take a holistic tactic to health, and believe that genuine well-being can occur—and endure—only when one is physically, mentally, spiritually and emotionally aligned. And yet often—too often—I work with clients who are incapable of seeing how their emotional stability directly impacts the state of their health. Read on…
